Sheriff’s Police Assigning Dedicated Safety Patrols Over Holiday Weekend

May 27, 2022Press Release

COOK COUNTY, IL – Cook County Sheriff’s Police will be assigning dedicated safety patrols in Chicago and the suburbs this Memorial Day weekend, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced today.

“Public safety is, and always has been, our top priority,” Sheriff Dart said. “We want families to enjoy the holiday weekend without fear, and we will do whatever we can to make sure that happens.”

In addition to our downtown Chicago operations, Sheriff’s Police will increase patrols, deploy additional officers, street teams, and increase foot patrols. These officers will patrol select locations within the city and suburban Cook to increase officer presence and to assist local law enforcement agencies wherever there is a credible threat of crime or conflict.

As part of the Sheriff’s Office’s Chicago Initiative plan which began in 2017, the office’s collaboration with the Chicago Police Department has helped reduce violence in communities that experience high crime. So far this year, shootings in Chicago’s 15th District, which includes the Austin neighborhood, are down 23.2% from the same period in 2021.
