When a theft or other crime occurs at a hospital, it sometimes goes unreported to law enforcement. A hospital may take an internal report from the victim of theft, or directly provide compensation for the stolen property, without reporting the incident to police.
Some victims incorrectly believe the hospital will automatically report the theft to law enforcement. This is not always the case.
When thefts are not reported to law enforcement, a description of the stolen property is not entered into police databases. The local police and neighboring agencies are then unaware of developing crime patterns, prohibiting an appropriate response.
