Members of the General Investigations Unit conduct all criminal investigative follow-up work on crimes in unincorporated Cook County, Cook County Forest Preserves, and the Village of Ford Heights. They are also members of numerous regional major crime task forces and assist local suburban agencies as requested. More than 4,000 cases a year are assigned to the detectives in this unit.
Included in this Unit is the Polygraph Division; the Accident Reconstruction Unit, whose investigators respond to all fatal accidents in unincorporated Cook County, as well as most of the suburban incorporated roads; and a forensic sketch artist, who is one of the few artists who still compiles drawings by hand.
Detectives in this unit are also responsible for registering offenders convicted of specific sex crimes, first degree murder, and/or crimes against youth, who reside, attend school and/or work in unincorporated Cook County. Detectives also ensure these offenders are in compliance with the terms of their release and with the law.
