The General Investigations Unit conducts all criminal investigative follow-up work on crimes in unincorporated Cook County, Cook County Forest Preserves and the Village of Ford Heights. They are also members of numerous task forces, responding to crimes when a task force is activated, as well as assisting local suburban agencies as requested. Their work totals to more than 5,000 cases a year being assigned to the detectives in this unit.
Included in this Unit is the Polygraph Division, whose examiners conduct over 400 polygraphs a year; the Accident Reconstruction Unit, whose investigators respond to all fatal accidents in unincorporated Cook County, as well as most of the suburban incorporated roads; and a forensic sketch artist, who is one of the few artists who still compiles drawings by hand.
Detectives in this unit are also responsible for checking on sex offenders residing, attending school and/or working in unincorporated Cook County, ensuring they are in compliance with the terms of their release and the law.
