SHERIFF’S POLICE SEEK INFORMATION IN CEMETERY VANDALISM

Friday, January 11, 2008 — Cook County Sheriff’s Police are seeking information in the vandalism of more than 50 headstones at a Jewish cemetery in unincorporated Norwood Park Township, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Friday.

The damage was discovered at Westlawn Cemetery, 7801 W. Montrose Ave., on Sunday,
Jan. 6 about 12:30 p.m. When Sheriff’s Police arrived, they found numerous anti-Semetic words and signs spray painted on 57 headstones with blue and silver paint.

Based on the investigation to date, it is believed the vandalism occurred sometime on Saturday, Jan. 5 when the cemetery was closed or early on the morning of Jan. 6. Sheriff’s Police have classified the matter as a hate crime.

Sheriff’s Police are asking anyone with information about this incident to contact the Sheriff’s Police at 847-635-1188.
