Wednesday, December 17, 2012 —A 33-year-old woman has been charged with abducting her 21-month old son during a supervised visit with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (IDCFS), Sheriff Tom Dart announced today.

Taneil CurtisTaneil Curtis appeared Sunday in Bond Court where she was charged with child abduction, a Class 4 felony. She is being held without bail at Cook County Jail.

The child was found safe Dec. 7 in Memphis, Tenn., a month after Curtis took him during the supervised visit at a South Holland restaurant. Curtis was arrested by Memphis Police. She waived extradition Dec. 10 in Tennessee. She returned to Cook County on Dec. 14 and turned over to South Holland Police.

During the Nov. 7 visit, Curtis told the IDCFS case aide that she wanted to give the child some water. When she took the child to the drink area, she ran out the door with him, got into a U-Haul truck and fled before the case aide could catch her.

At the time of that visit, Curtis had four outstanding warrants for her arrest and had previously taken the same child after he was born in February 2011 without notifying IDCFS. With the assistance of the FBI, Curtis and the baby were located in September of this year in Hammond, IN. The child has been in IDCFS custody since.

Curtis has lost custody of three other children due to substantial risk of physical harm.

The abducted child is back again in IDCFS custody.

Curtis was also charged with one count of battery, and two counts of financial identity theft stemming from other Cook County warrants.

Curtis returns to court 9 a.m., tomorrow, Tuesday Dec. 18 in Markham.
