CHICAGO MAN ARRESTED FOR MOLESTING CHILD IN COURTHOUSE

Wednesday, May 26, 2010— Bond was set today at $250,000 for a Chicago man accused of approaching a 3-year-old girl in a Cook County courthouse and sexually assaulting her, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Wednesday.

Christopher MarcianoChristopher Marciano, 22, of the 3400 block of South Aberdeen Street, is charged with criminal sexual abuse and aggravated battery. The incident happened Tuesday morning in an office at the Cook County Domestic Violence Courthouse, 555 W. Harrison St.

Cook County Sheriff’s Deputies noticed Marciano behaving strangely in the building, including dancing and singing to himself, and had been observing his movement since he came in just before 11 a.m. Marciano had come to the courthouse because he was arrested on May 7 for violating an order of protection in a domestic case. He was to be fitted for a GPS monitor in the probation office on Wednesday. Because of his behavior in the public hallways, deputies escorted Marciano to the probation office and advised staff to alert them if they became concerned about his behavior, as he waited in the office for a confidential visit with a staff member.

It was in the probation office that Marciano approached a girl who was there with her family and asked her a question. As she replied, Marciano grabbed her by the buttocks and then put his tongue in her mouth to kiss her. Members of the victim’s family, who do not know Marciano, quickly intervened and nearby deputies raced back into the office to take him into custody.

Marciano, a convicted felon, was sentenced to three years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for a burglary conviction in 2006. He was released from parole in April. He was sentenced to probation for his May 7 violation of a protective order. Marciano has a lengthy criminal history, including prior arrests for theft, battery and drug possession.

Marciano is set to appear in domestic violence court again on June 1. He will appear in criminal court on June 15.
