—Bond has been set at $1,000,000 for a Justice man whose reckless drunken driving caused the death of one and left three others in critical condition, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart announced Monday.
Sam Cafi, 28, of the 8300 block of South 79th Street in Justice, has been charged with 8 counts of felony DUI, including DUI resulting in a death. He appeared in Bridgeview bond court on 3/12/2012.
Around 2:00 AM on March 10th, Cofi was traveling westbound on 95th Street at a high rate of speed when he struck a vehicle that was traveling southbound on Lagrange Road. The vehicle that was struck rolled over several times, and came to rest in the westbound lanes of 95th Street. The driver of that vehicle was the only occupant, and was transported to Christ Hospital in critical condition.
Three passengers were riding in Cafi’s vehicle, including the front seat passenger who was ejected from the vehicle and subsequently died from his injuries. All three passengers were transported to Christ Hospital in critical condition, and two remain hospitalized.
Witnesses on the scene stated that Cafi exited his vehicle after the crash and made statements that he had been drinking at a nearby bar with the passengers in his vehicle. He was administered a field sobriety test as well as a breathalyzer test, both of which showed alcohol intoxication.
Cafi’s next court date is April 2nd in Bridgeview.
