Friday, January 25, 2013 —A 39-year-old man was arrested this morning during a court-ordered eviction for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition and not having a valid Firearm Owner’s Identification Card (FOID), Sheriff Thomas J. Dart said today.

Orlando GriffinAbout 9 a.m. today, Eviction Unit Deputy Sheriffs went to an apartment in the 2300 block of East 70th Street in Chicago to enforce the court order. The person who was to be evicted, Orlando Griffin, answered the door. During an eviction questionnaire, Griffin told the officers that he had a handgun in a kitchen drawer. That is where officers found a .357 Magnum loaded with four bullets.

Officers learned that Griffin is a convicted felon for a prior weapons-related offense and would be ineligible to have a FOID Card by Illinois law. He told the officers he had the gun because he lives in a dangerous area.

Griffin is scheduled to be in Bond Court at the George N. Leighton Criminal Court Building tomorrow (Saturday).

This is the second time in as many weeks where a weapons violation arrest was made during a court-ordered eviction. On Jan. 17, Eviction Unit Deputies arrested 54-year-old John T. Madigan in the 400 block of McCarthy Road in Lemont for three weapons violations.

A 45-caliber pistol, a 25-caliber pistol and a push-button spring knife, commonly referred to as a switchblade, were found after a hat on a bed moved when Madigan sat down there. Also found in a gun safe was a total of 250 rounds of various types of ammunition of various calibers, including an assault rifle caliber.

Madigan was arrested for possessing firearms and ammunition without a valid FOID Card. He was also arrested for unlawful use of a weapon -- blackjack/ knife. He posted bail for the $1,000 D-bond he was given for the three misdemeanor charges. Madigan’s next court date is scheduled for Feb.15 in Bridgeview.
