CHICAGO MAN ARRESTED AFTER STRIKING DEPUTY WITH CAR
Thursday, Febuary 25, 2010 — A Chicago man is free on bond as he was arrested after driving his vehicle toward a Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy and hitting that deputy’s leg with his car, Sheriff Tom Dart said.
Herbert Marshall, 47, of the 2200 block of South State Street, was released on an I-bond Wednesday evening after an incident earlier that day outside the Daley Center.
Around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Marshall was sitting in the driver’s seat of his 2009 Hyundai on Randolph Street when Deputy Dalibor Jevtic walked toward the car in an attempt to question Marshall about the length of time he had been parked there and possibly issue him a citation. When Marshall saw Jevtic, he began to drive at the deputy. Jevtic ordered Marshall to stop numerous times before the car struck him in the leg. Only at that point did Marshall stop his vehicle.
When questioned, Jevtic noticed Marshall’s eyes were bloodshot and there was a strong odor of alcohol coming from him. Jevtic also saw a nearly-empty 40-ounce bottle of beer in Marshall’s lap.
Chicago Police then arrived and took Marshall into custody. A test revealed Marshall’s blood-alcohol level was .082. He admitted to earlier using marijuana, but refused further tests.
Marshall is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of drugs, driving on a suspended license, possession of alcohol in a motor vehicle and not using proper care to avoid pedestrians in the roadway.
Jevtic, a six-year deputy who provides security at the Daley Center, was not seriously injured in the incident. Marshall’s next court date is set for March 23 at the Daley Center.
