In December of 1987, Officer Jeffrey Blakey was assigned to the Transportation Unit at the Cook County Department of Corrections. He was responsible for transporting prisoners for their court appearances at the outlying district courthouses. It was during a stop at the old Des Plaines Courthouse that one of the prisoners struck Officer Blakey and tried to escape out of the fire exit. Officer Blakey reacted quickly to thwart the escape attempt and became involved in a physical altercation with the prisoner. As a result of the stuggle that ensued, Officer Blakey was thrown down a flight of stairs and suffered a compound fracture of his ankle. During his recuperation, Officer Blakey was stricken with a pulmonary embolism. A blood clot had traveled from his broken ankle to his heart. He died on January 5, 1988. |
