- 38% of girls are sexually abused before the age of 18
- 16% of boys are sexually abused before the age of 18
- 90–95% of sexual abuse cases go unreported to police
- In most sexual abuse cases, the child knows the abuser
- Most often, physical force is not used by the offender to get a child to agree to engage in inappropriate sex acts
- 70–80% of sexual abuse survivors report excessive use of drugs and alcohol
- The majority of perpetrators of child maltreatment (77%) were parents and another 11 percent were other relatives of the victim
