The Sheriffs Senior Citizen Law Enforcement Academy is an eight-week course
presented by the Cook County Sheriffs Office which professionals from the Sheriffs
Office as well as local law enforcement agency
officials educate participants on a variety of
important topics, ranging from Crimes Against Seniors and Basic Police Functions to Gang and Drug
Awareness. Seniors will benefit through a better understanding of the responsibilities of law
enforcement agencies and in return this knowledge will foster better communication between seniors, the
Sheriffs Office and other law enforcement agencies.
The Sheriff is offering the Academy to all Cook County residents over the age of fifty. Any senior
citizen organization, center or home throughout the county may host the Academy. Graduates of the Academy
may choose to start or join a neighborhood watch program or possibly organize a local advisory board in their
community to share the information.
The curriculum is designed to heighten seniors awareness about crime prevention programs
established to benefit their age group. The lessons provide specific information to empower seniors
to feel more confident about their personal safety.
On June 9, 1998, the Chicago Police Department, Cook County Sheriff's Office, Illinois Attorney General, and
the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) signed a Triad cooperative agreement reaffirming their
commitment to work together to enhance the quality of life for older members of the community.
