THE COOK COUNTY SHERIFF ’S MERIT BOARD
Will issue applications for the positions of: Deputy Sheriff or Correctional Officer
Applications will be distributed on Saturday, November, 1 st, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on a first come, first serve basis until exhausted.

Applications will be available at four (4) locations:
Criminal Court Administration Building 2650 S. California, Chicago, Illinois
Markham Court Building 16501 S. Kedzie Parkway, Markham, Illinois
Maywood Court Building 1500 Maybrook Drive, Maywood, Illinois
Rolling Meadows Court Building 2121 Euclid, Rolling Meadows, Illinois

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or equivalent G.E.D. from an accredited institution, have a valid driver’s license acceptable to the Merit Board, and pass all the required testing procedures conducted by the Merit Board.
Subsequent to the Merit Board’s Certification, The Sheriff’s Department, as a provision of conditional employment, may require further screening of certified applicants. Notice of these tests will be mailed to eligible applicants at a later date.
A $25.00 Cook County Filing Fee made payable to the Cook County Collector by money order or certified check only will be needed with the completed application to be processed.

Completed applications may be returned on the day of the pass out. Applications not completed at the time of initial pass out may be hand delivered to the Sheriff’s Merit Board Office, Suite 1100, 69 W. Washington, between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday or by U.S. Mail. All applications received on November 1st, 2008, should be completed and returned to the Merit Board by December 5th, 2008.

Sworn Personnel

Applications for the positions of Deputy Sheriff and Correctional Officer are distributed by the Cook County Sheriff’s Merit Board. The initial distribution occurs approximately the first or second Saturday in November, at designated times and locations which are published in all major Chicago newspapers.  At that time, applications are handed out one per person, on a first come first serve basis, until exhausted.  Thereafter, until the first Monday in June, applications may be requested directly from the Cook County Sheriff’s Merit Board.  After the first Monday in June, no applications will be distributed until the following November.

Applicant requirements for the positions of Deputy Sheriff and Correctional Officer include:

Citizenship:               Must be a U.S. Citizen
Age:                            At least 21 years of age (no maximum age limit)
Education:                 High school diploma or equivalent G.E.D. from an accredited institution and acceptable by the Cook County Sheriff’s Merit Board
License:                     Valid driver’s license acceptable by the Cook County Merit Board
Starting Salary:         from $43,500

Applicants must pass all required testing, conducted by the Merit Board, including, but not limited to, a written examination, a physical agility test and a background investigation.

Upon certification by the Merit Board, applicants will also be required to submit to further pre-employment screening, including, but not limited to, a physical ability test, a polygraph screening, a psychological screening and an oral interview.  Notification of all phases of the pre-employment process will be done via mail and/or verbal communication.

Applicants for Sheriff’s Police must have graduated from either the Cook County Sheriff’s Deputy Sheriff or Correctional Officer academy and have completed a minimum of 60 hours of college credit before becoming eligible to apply and take the Sheriff’s Police exam.

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office does not accept lateral transfers.
