The Intake section, or Receiving area, is responsible for intake of detainees during the incarceration
process. This department admits approximately 276 inmates daily. During 2006 DOC booked 99,663 detainees, breaking our
old record!
Arrest and Incarceration Procedures
- The alleged suspect of a crime is taken by police to a suburban police
department or Chicago precinct station house where the suspect is detained
until appearance before a judge, who will set a bond and issue mittimus
papers (warrant of commitment).
- The alleged suspect is then taken by Officers at the Cook County Sheriff
to Cook County Jail to be held until either the defendant posts bond or
the final disposition (acquittal or sentencing) of the case.
Intake processing includes these steps:
- Mittimus papers are verified.
- Detainee is issued an 11digit DOC ID Number (based on the
year and number of entry; e.g. first detainee processed for 1998 would
have the identification number 9800001) and fingerprinted.
- Detainee is photographed by computer image system.
- Duplicate Photo ID Cards (pink & white) are prepared
for division living unit & personal movement identification of detainees
whenever outside of living unit.
- Detainee is interviewed
for basic personal information (name, address, next of kin, gang allegiance,
etc.) and security classification (present charges & criminal background,
age, status in community at present address) to determine suitable housing
(minimum, medium or maximum security).
- Detainee turns in personal property and a receipt is issued.
- Detainee physical given by Cermak Health Services.
- Allowed to make a phone call.
- Detainee is taken to assigned division (based on classification)
by that divisions transport officer. Upon arrival he/she turns in
clothing, and is issued a DOC uniform, Blanket, Pillow, bed roll and hygiene
pak.
- When a detainee is discharged, the procedure is reversed.
