The New Cermak Health Services facility was conceived and designed to address changes in the detainee population and their health needs. Between 1981 and 2006 the daily population of detainees increased from approximately 3,900 to almost 10,000. As a result of the increase, demand has also increased for clinical services at Cermak including the infirmary, emergency room, clinics, lab, X-ray, pharmacy and medical records. And their is a significant increase in documented cases of AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, turberculosis, substance abuse and mental health problems among the detainee population.
