Home > Departments > Corrections > Criminal Intelligence Unit
The mission of the Criminal Intelligence Unit is to protect and insure the safety of staff members and detainees within the Sheriff’s Department of Corrections and Court facilities. The mission is accomplished by gathering intelligence relating to criminal activity within the jail, processing and analyzing the intelligence and disseminating the intelligence. An ancillary byproduct is criminal related street intelligence which is shared with and acted upon by gang, narcotic and detective units of police departments throughout Cook County. Narcotic intelligence is also shared with HIDTA and distributed to Federal law enforcement agencies throughout the United States.
Additionally, the CIU is responsible for conducting follow-up investigations into all crimes committed within the Cook County Jail and all Cook County Court rooms and buildings. The CIU also is responsible for investigating threats and crimes against judges and elected county officials. The CIU has also partnered with the US Marshal Service to form a Judicial Task Force to investigate judicial threats both throughout Cook County and Federal Courts.
