There are few more disturbing topics facing us in today’s society than the devastating problem of child sexual abuse. Current statistics indicate a child is sexually abused in our country every two minutes, and experts believe that 90 percent of offenders are someone the child and family is familiar with. As parents, teachers and community leaders, there is no greater responsibility facing all of us than protecting our children from this type of abuse and empowering kids with the knowledge and the tools they need to protect themselves. Open, honest discussion that promotes awareness and raises consciousness is the key to preventing this problem from occurring. The Cook County Sheriff’s Youth Services Department offers two programs designed to increase awareness and outline safety measures to prevent child sexual abuse. It is imperative that adults become aware and sensitized to any indicators of sexual abuse and are able to respond appropriately. I encourage any parent, teacher or concerned community resident to contact our Youth Services Department to set up a program in your school or community. It is essential that we work together in the interest of our children.
